Grand Justice Gormayne (Flesh-Eater Courts)

1

Grand Justice Gormayne is the highest magistrate in all of Ushoran's ghoul kingdoms. He ensures that the Carrion King’s laws and edicts are followed – no matter how insane they may be – and those who transgress are punished with grisly fates. A cunning orator, Gormayne spurs his ghoulish ‘juries’ into a frothing rage, condemning foes to be bloodily torn apart.

Swinging a gore-streaked gavel fashioned from well-gnawed bones, the Grand Justice calls for order and cracks unruly skulls. He pronounces judgement on Ushoran's enemies whilst dressed in what he believes to be the finest robes and wig of office, reading ancient laws from a ragged 'legal tome'.

Additional information

Grand Justice Gormayne is the supreme judicial authority of the Flesh-Eater Courts, answering only to Ushoran himself. Always clad in the periwig and judicial robes of his office, he pronounces judgement over those who transgress the Mortarch's laws.

As supreme law officer of Ushoran's domain, Gormayne presides over the administration of justice within New Summercourt and beyond. He is responsible for ensuring that the courts are not only fair and just, but are also perceived to be fair and just, and in so doing show the true might of the Mortarch's rule. Even in a land as enlightened as New Summercourt, criminal elements and sedition lurk in the shadows, and so Gormayne's work is never-ending. Whether presiding over all aspects of a trial, from selecting jurors to pronouncing sentence, or advising his illustrious liege on the finer points of law and precedent, Gormayne is always busy.

In an apparently unique variant of the flesh-eater curse, Gormayne experiences brief moments of lucidity, perceiving the truth of his surroundings - his starched wig but a heap of intestines, his courtroom a gore-caked ruin, his liege lord a deformed monster. Fearful of what would happen should Ushoran or the rest of the court learn of this, he attempts to cover these visions as best he can, but even so rumours persist of odd behaviour or pensive silences. Some quietly worry that Gormayne's weighty duties are affecting his mental state, perhaps even rendering him unsuitable for office. However, so long as Gormayne enjoys the favour of the Summerking, he is unlikely to be replaced.

In truth, Ushoran is well aware of Gormayne's predicament. The abhorrant's strange semi-lucidity is of great interest to the Mortarch, and the attempts to hide it from him provide some amusement. To Ushoran, Gormayne is dangerous - he can work unimpeded with outside forces, after all - but also useful for the same reasons. For example, unlike Ushoran's other vassals, Gormayne is capable of reading the true contents of books and scrolls, allowing the Grand Justice uncommon insight into the minds of other races. This talent has given Gormayne a reputation as something of a scholar at court, as the abhorrants perceive the texts to be written in a long-lost language.
